We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —“We are most deeply asleep at the switch,” wrote Annie Dillard, “when we fancy we control any switches at all. When the Senate voted to send new aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan two months ago, House Speaker Mike Johnson took no action. With the help of Democrats, the House approved aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan on Saturday. Writing for CNN Opinion, he emphasized that there are legal principles that require universities to prohibit expressions of antisemitism.

For Roberts, having a space that feels like home is a particular priority, she explained, as she moved often as a child. “We want a house to look like it’s been there for 50 years,” Pierce told AD in the cover story. She shares the home with her three-year-old son, Rhodes. ADWhile most of the pieces in Roberts' home are antique or designer, her open kitchen includes an affordable surprise. Though many pieces are courtesy of design studios or antique finds, Pierce and Ward don’t look down on more accessible commercial brands.

On Jan. 9, TikToker Brittany Pietsch posted a video of her layoff from tech company Cloudflare. The video went viral, with various outlets weighing in both on how the company handled the layoff and Pietsch's choice to post it at all. "I documented my layoff because at that point I was already very active on TikTok," she tells Make It. "I think that this is insanely risky for future job prospects," says Nolan Church, former Google recruiter and current CEO of salary data company FairComp. Lawmakers from both parties plan to introduce a sweeping bill in Congress on Wednesday that would force the military for the first time to track and limit troops’ exposure to damaging shock waves from firing their own weapons. The bill, known as the Blast Overpressure Safety Act, would order the military to begin recording troops’ individual blast exposures in training and regularly give exposed troops neurocognitive tests to check for signs of possible injuries. It would also require military medical personnel to be trained in recognizing injuries from repeated blast exposure, which are currently often misdiagnosed as behavioral health issues, if they are diagnosed at all. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, and Joni Ernst, Republican of Iowa, plan to introduce the bill in the Senate on Wednesday. Representative Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, plans to introduce a similar bill in the House.

Speaker Mike Johnson told Republican senators during their closed-door retreat Wednesday that he was committed to finding a path ahead for Ukraine aid in the House of Representatives, a sign GOP senators took to mean that aid to the embattled country isn’t yet dead in Congress. McCaul said Johnson will put such a House foreign aid bill on the floor after the appropriations process is done. McCaul dismissed the concept of sending Ukraine aid through a discharge petition, saying he is “worried” about that approach, highlighting instead the REPO Act and formatting aid as a loan. “You know, it feels like Speaker Johnson makes up his strategy one or two days at a time. “Speaker Johnson doesn’t need to make up a new plan.

Neil Young attends a press conference for Farm Aid 34 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre on September 21, 2019 in East Troy, Wisconsin. Neil Young on Wednesday said his music will return to Spotify , just over two years after he and other artists removed their catalogues from the music streaming platform amid a vaccine disinformation dispute. Spotify announced a multi-year deal with Rogan last month that removed its exclusivity, meaning "The Joe Rogan Experience" will return to platforms, including Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Amazon Music. Young previously said Spotify accounted for 60% of his global streaming revenue, prior to his departure. The move placed Spotify in a position to choose between numerous legendary musical figures and the controversial but hugely popular Joe Rogan podcast, which was its most streamed show in 2023.

Following Young’s protest, the singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell also removed her music from Spotify, and the R&B singer India.Arie circulated clips showing Rogan using a racial slur repeatedly on the show. Rogan apologized for his use of the word, and Spotify quietly removed dozens of episodes of his show. Spotify signed Rogan to a deal in 2020, worth at least $200 million, that made his show exclusive to that platform. Last month, the company announced a new, multiyear arrangement with Rogan in which Spotify would also distribute “The Joe Rogan Experience” to other podcast platforms, as well as YouTube. In his statement on Tuesday, Young didn’t give a timeline for when his music would return to Spotify, and a representative of Spotify did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gold bars arranged at the Korea Gold Exchange store in Seoul, South Korea, on Oct. 13, 2023. Gold prices steadied near a three-month peak on Tuesday, supported by subdued U.S. manufacturing and construction spending, as investors awaited testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and key jobs data later this week. Spot gold was flat at $2,114.59 per ounce, as of 0423 GMT, hovering around Monday's levels of $2119.69 that marked its highest point since Dec. 4. London's gold price benchmark hit an all-time high of $2,098.05 per troy ounce at an afternoon auction on Monday. The world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Trust's GLD holdings were down 10% from the previous year as of March 4.

At the time, Australian police dismissed her concerns, insisting that her mother, Marion Barter, had disappeared by choice, and wanted nothing to do with her family. Ric Blum told the NSW Coroner's court that he last saw Barter in June 1997, just before she left Australia. Blum told the court Cornelius had lied about their relationship, which was platonic, he said. Several years later, Ghislaine Danlois-Dubois met Blum in 2006 through an advertisement she posted in a newspaper seeking companionship. O’Sullivan concluded by reading Leydon’s own words about her mother, Marion Barter, read from her submission.

Dear listeners,I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but this year’s Grammys were … really good? Tracy Chapman, radiating joy and in fine voice, sang “Fast Car” publicly for the first time in ages, alongside a visibly reverent Luke Combs. For today’s playlist, we’re going to hear from some more of those slightly-less-than-household-name artists who took home Grammys this year. I chose two selections of my own, and I also asked my fellow Times pop critics Jon Pareles and Jon Caramanica to send me a few of their picks — a mix of jazz, folk, pop, gospel and more. Listen below to tracks from Laufey, Peso Pluma and Samara Joy, and check out the Bonus Tracks for more of our Grammy coverage.

Gold and silver bars of various sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metals dealer Pro Aurum in Munich. Gold and silver are expected to climb further in 2024 on expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates, UBS forecasts. Also this comes with a weaker dollar" said the investment bank's precious metals strategist Joni Teves, who expects the metal to hit $2,200 per ounce by the end of the year. Gold prices tend to have an inverse relationship with interest rates. As interest rates dip, gold becomes more appealing compared to alternative investments like bonds, which would yield weaker returns in a low interest rate environment.

True to form, Swift ensured this year's Grammy discourse would be dominated by her music, even if she didn't win a major award. Alas, the evening ended with Swift notching her record-breaking fourth win for album of the year. I was even more disappointed to watch Swift win over SZA, whose sophomore album, "SOS," earned universal acclaim. Despite being the most awarded person in Grammy history, Beyoncé has won only once in a general-field category (song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010). Only 11 Black artists have ever won album of the year.

It's Taylor Swift's world, and she just allows us to live in it. “Midnights” earned Swift her fourth career Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, an achievement no one can match. It breaks a tie with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each won the honor three times. Swift was the last example of an action-packed show where women earned the biggest honors and had the majority of the most memorable performances. There was a brief pause before SZA accepted an award for best R&B song, since she was changing backstage.

Takeaways From a Grammy Night Where Women Reigned
  + stars: | 2024-02-04 | by ( Ben Sisario | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Women thoroughly dominated the 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, with a history-making album of the year win by Taylor Swift and victories by Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, SZA, Lainey Wilson, the Colombian pop star Karol G and the band boygenius. The wins capped a year when women were extraordinarily successful in pop music, and also signified a change for the Grammys, which have frequently been criticized — as recently as five years ago — for overlooking female artists on the show. In addition to the wins, the show featured powerful performances by SZA, Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and even Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman — two godmothers of modern songwriting who have made only rare public appearances in recent years. In taking album of the year for “Midnights,” Swift became the first artist to win the Grammys’ top prize four times, beating a trio of male legends — Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon — who had three.

It’s hard to believe that at 80 years old, after a groundbreaking career in music, there are still new achievements left for Joni Mitchell. But on Sunday night, she did something for the first time: performed on the Grammys. Joined by Brandi Carlile, Jacob Collier, Lucius, Blake Mills, Allison Russell and SistaStrings, the singer-songwriter played “Both Sides Now.”Carlile, one of Mitchell’s most high-profile champions, is largely responsible for bringing her hero back to the stage, and she introduced Mitchell, who earlier won the Grammy for best folk album for “Joni Mitchell at Newport.” Nine years ago, Mitchell had an aneurysm and largely vanished from the public eye; her legions of fans feared that her singing days were complete. But the writer and unmistakable soprano behind classics like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “A Case of You” was not finished. She made a surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival alongside Carlile, as well as musicians including Wynonna Judd and Marcus Mumford.

The Grammy Awards show, billed as “music’s biggest night,” is taking place in Los Angeles. If her “SOS” wins album of the year, she would become the first Black woman to win the award in 25 years. If she wins album of the year for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist to win the category four times. Tracy Chapman returned to the Grammys to sing “Fast Car” with Luke Combs, a song she closed the ceremony with in 1989.
